Let’s Talk: What Makes Great Children’s Book Illustration?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been exploring the world of children’s book illustration lately, and I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Whether you’re an author, illustrator, publisher, or just a fan of beautifully illustrated kids’ books — what do you think makes an illustration truly stand out for young readers?

For me, the best children’s book illustrations are the ones that:

  • Bring the story to life in a way that words alone can’t

  • Use bright colors and fun details to grab a child’s imagination

  • Make the characters expressive and relatable

  • Add hidden little surprises that kids can discover on each page

Some illustrators create dreamy watercolor scenes, while others use bold, modern digital art — and both styles can work so well depending on the story.

I’m also curious: Do you think it’s better when one artist illustrates the entire book for consistency, or do you like seeing books with mixed styles?

If you’re an illustrator, what tips do you have for beginners wanting to break into children’s book art? Any must-have tools, portfolio advice, or favorite techniques?

Feel free to share your favorite illustrated kids’ books too — I’m always looking for inspiration!

Looking forward to your thoughts and recommendations.

Cheers!
